James wasn't dumb, he knew Snape would be the good little watchdog with the prettyboy around. Charms and transfiguration were to James what potions were to Snape. That wand was out quick as a flash as he rapidly transfigured a cushion under Remus out of one of the floorboards to catch him, then using the very same spell to knock Snape hard into the wall behind him, missing narrowly but still enough to likely startle him. He then sent the slipping charm again at the two Slytherins, as if to make a point. The threat had been averted but Snape's action still stood. Treat Remus like an experiment, and attack a first year? Oh no no no. Just for effect, he stood up and extended a hand to Sirius as if asking him to dance, keeping things light as possible since he at least stopped Remus from getting hurt. Of course, he was in a room laced with Slytherins, so his guard was far from down even when acting so. Snape thought he was a watchdog? Watch what the real thing does.
Looks like this party is finally getting started. Might I have this dance? Do try not to go too overboard?
He smirked, of course he didn't mean an actual dance, just inviting him into the fray. You don't get to attack one of them or those they care about without them all descending on you, especially not both at once.
